Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) is
a public two-year college supported by the State
of Connecticut and governed by the Board of Trustees
of Community-Technical Colleges. One of 12 institutions
in the community college system, QVCC’s
service region is Windham County in the northeastern
corner of the state. The College conducts its
educational and service programs from two locations:
a 68 acre campus on the outskirts of Danielson
and a Center in downtown Willimantic.
QVCC has developed comprehensive degree and
certificate programs to be responsive to the
needs of the residents and prides itself on offering
academic programs of high quality. Its graduates
transfer easily to many four-year colleges and
universities, and its occupational programs are
highly regarded by area employers. The College
also has partnerships with the University of
Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut State University
utilizing the concept of join admissions. With
UConn, the program is called the Guaranteed Admissions
Program, and with ECSU it is the Transfer Compact.
QVCC has a strong and growing program of continuing
education and community services activities.
The Center for Community & Professional Learning
(CPL) works in partnership with college and community
constituencies to develop and provide innovative
program and service initiatives that respond
to community learning needs and support local
economic development efforts. The programs and
services include credit-free courses, job-focused
training options, customized training services,
small business consulting, and programs as varied
as Learning in Retirement and Kids Academy. The
College also functions to a large extent as a
community center, opening its library and many
events to the general public.
The College works actively to enable area businesses
and industries to receive cost-effective, customized
employee training and development services. Such
services include: free consultation to define
existing training needs; assessment of training
needs; and implementation of cost-effective on-site
or college-based company specific training and
development programs. Training available to businesses
is diverse and includes computer-related software
applications, lean manufacturing, statistical
process control, and numerous professional development
programs for supervisors and managers.
Between 1999 and 2004, the College’s enrollment
has grown almost 34%. Enrollment for 2003-2004
was 1,571 for the fall semester and 1,511 for
spring. Plans are underway for a 30,000 square
foot addition that will house eight new classrooms,
a new bookstore, library expansion, art gallery,
community meeting room, and increased office
space. In addition the project includes partial
renovation of existing space, including a plastic
technology lab, a computer classroom, the Learning
Center, and the CPL Office.
QVCC has established itself as a dynamic,
viable and significant institution in and for
the community it serves.
